I resent family holidays. I don’t like to be forced to do anything I don’t really want to do and going over to the Old Lady’s house on Easter ranks high on my list of things I don’t want to do. But I went and I was on my best behavior. The oddest thing happened. My husband got mad at his mother and a heated discussion took place. It was not a pleasant experience and one that I hope I never witness again. I mean, I’m used to getting into it with her but I’m not used to seeing my husband slam his hand on the table and tell her what’s what. It was pretty awful.

I’ve made a pact with myself regarding future holidays and I’ll be interested to see if I can keep it. I have decided that I will never eat another meal that she has cooked. I watched her wipe her nose on a kitchen towel and that was the clincher for me. I can’t get that picture out of my mind and I just want to gag when I think about it. I guess that’s right up there with the picture in my mind of her sitting across from me at the dinner table and seeing her nose running like a faucet. I’m trying to think ahead of creative ways to get out of eating over there again. For Mother’s Day I plan to prepare the meal myself as a gift to her. That should work but I don’t know what kind of excuse I’ll be able to think of for subsequent holiday meals.

I sympatize, I really hate to eat at my inlaw’s house too! Frankly, I don’t like to go to their house at all! My husband and I go on holidays, out of propriety, but it’s a forced thing. His step-mother is a horrible hateful woman, she’s nasty to him, and I’ve had a time or two where I’ve had bite my tongue to keep from telling her where she can put it. So, yeah, you could say I hate family holiday’s too.

Enjoyed your blog, here by way of Blog Catalog. :)

You could tell her you’re trying a new low carb diet so you can’t eat anything with bread it it, or anything else much less. You could use that excuse to bring over some healthy prepared at home fruit. Yummy! :p. That would be easy to pull off?

I know how it goes with family holidays. I can’t stand going to huge family outings. My aunt, uncle and grandfather always seem to spew anti-homosexual remarks which is very uncomfortable because I have no issues with gay people. *shrugs* guess there isn’t much I can do about that.

Hi there. Just saw that your birthday was a couple of weeks ago, so happy birthday for then.

Will your husband back you up with the no eating policy? If so, can you come up with a food allergy – say a gluten free diet. In respect of your not wanting to make her prepare special meals suggest that you bring your own ‘specially catered dietary requirements’?

If he won’t fall in with the ruse, then you’re going to have to get more and more creative as you go along and the ‘old lady’ will probably just end up offended (and she sounds like she’d like to be given a reason).

I don’t think I can come up with a food allergy after knowing her for ten years already… I guess it would be offensive for me to say I’m allegic to snot… heh

The only thing I can think of now is to insist on doing the cooking myself… this should work well for Mother’s Day in May since that would be a natural thing to do…

Thanks for the birthday wishes Yowzer… :) I usually don’t even mention my birthday on the net but did this year for some reason…

    Krystin, thanks for stopping by!

I have to bite my tongue all the time but sometimes I don’t bite it fast enough and snap back at her. The mandatory dinners really are horrible for me.

Hi Mike, I know exactly what you mean… my MIL seems to find it mandatory to say something bad about everyone and every subject… For example, her neighbor across the street bought several bags of M&M’s to send to my step-son in Iraq… the Old Lady says “it is only a few bags of candy but I guess that’s all right”… LOL! It was irritating when she said it but when I wrote it here it made me laugh for some reason… as my husband says “she is what she is”… and that just about sums her up…
